Moving to Portland, Oregon and finding work in food service is easy for Paul and Ramona. A struggling musician without bandmates, Paul becomes introverted and moody. Ramona's friend from college introduces her to a new social circle and she goes out while Paul stays home. When Ramona confronts turning thirty, it's time to grow beyond old routines and her relationship with Paul comes to a head. Paul and Ramona, a young couple in need of a change, move to Portland, Oregon from their hometown of Boise. Upon arriving, they sublet an apartment and begin to familiarize themselves with the city. While finding work is easy (Ramona begins waitressing, while Paul gets a job at a coffee shop), change is difficult. Their life in this new city seems to be on repeat. When their car breaks down and a tandem bicycle becomes their primary means of transportation, Ramona refuses to ride. A struggling musician, Paul, spends most of his time at home, steadily becoming introverted and moody, while Ramona, at the insistence of a co-worker, is thrust into a new social circle, where she begins an affair with a co-worker. Ramona and Paul’s relationship implodes after she confesses and in the ensuing conflict, she impulsively leaves to stay with a friend. Paul, desperate to work through the pain of the split, befriends a quirky barista named Ali. I am awestruck by this movie. Fast zombies that can use weapons, even guns, and are capable of intelligent thought. They plot a strategic offensive to take over the city, hitting the airport, then the TV stations and the power plant. If you love horror, gory, and violent movies and don't mind a little bad acting, then you will LOVE this movie. It is exciting and even a bit suspenseful. It starts out fast and hard and maintains a steady pace of mayhem and carnage. I can't believe more people haven't seen this film. I have yet to meet a horror movie buff that has seen this film before. It is a true gemstone of European horror and exploitation, definitely up to par with the classics of the genre such as Zombi 2, Demons, House by the Cemetery, etc. And it's even readily available uncut (92 minutes) on DVD from Anchor Bay (under the title Nightmare City) and on VHS under the title City of the Walking Dead. Super gory and violent, a must for fans of Italian grind house flicks.

"Aleksei Gherman junior’s film The Last Train premiered in Moscow in mid December during the film festival Stalker, which also awarded it the prize for the best film. However, its first screening had already taken place in the ‘controcorrente’ competition of the Venice Film Festival in September. The film, dealing with theme of war and shot in black and white, remained unnoticed by the press in the context of the Venice Film Festival (preoccupied almost exclusively with Zviagintsev’s The Return), although it was awarded a prize. In Moscow, it made rather a different impression, especially when set in the context of films dealing with human rights issues.Gherman’s film is, in a sense, a response to his father’s war film 20 - Days without War. Maybe this explains the oddity of a young, clearly talented director venturing on his debut film into the trodden territories of the war film, a theme that dominated Russian cinema in general, but had also been dealt with by his father. For Gherman Junior, however, war knows neither winners nor losers: instead of exploring the history of WWII, Gherman looks at the fate of two men who have failed to make the right choice (or a choice) at the right time. Therefore, they are now the victims of circumstances, of politics, of regimes – which they have or have not elected. Gherman’s concern is with people in particular circumstances, which are not their choice, and how they cope with these unwanted situations.
